It really is more heartbreaking when someone who's gone through it tells you the story. All this time it's been like, "Oh, Japanese Occupation. Torture. Suffering. Forty-something years ago. Get over it." But when my grandmother told me the story, it was so different. People really did get their fingernails pulled off so mercilessly. People really were locked in huge tanks, filled up to their noses with faeces. People really did have to down whole buckets of soapwater.
Almost turned on the waterworks.

Sushi is still orgasmic, though.
